Chip Leer is a passionate and respected multi-species angler. He is also the Product Manager for Northland Fishing Tackle, helping develop the latest fish-catching gear and shape future trends in the sport.
Chip’s deep concern for our fisheries and fishing traditions also drives his support for organizations including the Mississippi Headwater Board’s “Changing Minnesota Traditions” campaign to save Minnesota’s beloved lakes and rivers from aquatic invasive species.
He also serves as director of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame, a non-profit outreach organization dedicated to memorializing the state’s fishing history and preserving its future.
More About Chip Leer
Chip Leer’s fishing career began guiding anglers on legendary North Country waters including Lake of the Woods, Kabetogama and Leech Lake.
In the mid-1990s, he founded the Leech Lake Guide Coalition and his annual tournament, the Leech Lake Evinrude Walleye Classic. From humble beginnings, the event evolved into one of the Midwest’s largest walleye tournaments with 250 teams. In 2007, Chip received Minnesota’s highest fishing honor when he was chosen to guide the governor on opening day.
A widely published author, Chip has written for numerous publications including Midwest Outdoors, Minnesota Sportsman, Outdoor News, Fish & Game Finder, and several local newspapers. He has also provided valuable content via interviews to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Chicago Sun Times, North American Fisherman magazine, In-Fisherman Publications and others. Chip also created three fishing-based publications, Dock Talk, Fishing the WildSide, and Fishing the WildSide On Ice. He also helped launch the industry’s first-ever electronic fishing magazine.
No stranger to the airwaves, Chip’s recognizable and ever-enthusiastic voice has been heard on radio programs across the continent, and he is also a well-known television personality. TV credits include launching Fishing the WildSide On Ice, the first-ever series dedicated solely to ice fishing, along with hosting In-Fisherman’s Ice Guide TV, Fishing the WildSide, FLW Walleye and the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour, plus appearances on Midwest Outdoors, North American Fisherman, Ron Schara’s Minnesota Bound, Up-North Outdoors, Venture North, and numerous other programs.
He has been on the forefront of sport fishing techniques, tactics & trends. Working with premier manufacturers in product development while exploring cutting edge ideas fishing with the best anglers on open water and ice. He is an industry influencer that thru experience has shaped the products we fish with and refined techniques to catch fish.
Over his 30 plus year career he has been the tournament director of the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail, TV Host of the FLW Walleye Tour, co-host of In-Fisherman Ice Guide TV, published in numerous regional and national publications, appeared on countless radio programs and shared his knowledge and passion for fishing through his brand, Fishing the Wildside.
Chip continues as the driving force behind Fishing the WildSide, an outdoor sports marketing and communications company. He serves as Interim Director of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame, emcee and TV host of the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour, and fishes extensively, competing in regional tournaments and continually refining tackle and techniques to advance the sport of fishing.
